Christ-Like Friendship and Support

Holding hands in fellowship with Christ-like friendship as we learn how to connect the truth of God's Word with everyday life, while walking through the pages of His Word.
Today's Daily Devotional
Let God's Word shine light on your step today
as you grow in your relationship with Christ.
This is what the Scripture says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
(Heb. 3:15)
Devotional: The Name of the Lord (part 1)
March 6th

(Psalms 20:1-4 ESV)
Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion!
May he remember all your offering and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah
May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans!

From the very beginning when God first started creation, He gave it a name. It wasn’t enough for Him to just create something without a distinct name. “God named the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night.’ Evening passed, morning came. This was the first day” (Gen. 1:5). In Genesis 2, Scripture tells us that after God made man, He brought the animals and birds to man so he could name them. Several times elsewhere in Scripture when He gave someone a new life, He started by giving them a new name. And, when He was ready to rescue His people and called Moses to lead them, He began by introducing Himself so there would be no doubt about who was doing the talking! You can know about someone without knowing their name. But when you really get to know them, then you will also know their name.

All that I am, praise the Lord; everything in me,
praise his holy name.
(Ps. 103:1)

When you know someone’s name, your relationship becomes more personal than when they are just a face. That is what God wants us to do. He’s GOD, yes. But when we spend time with Him, when we get to know Him, we find that -- as if that weren’t enough -- He becomes so much more to us. He becomes personal to us, not just some lofty figure “out there.” God desires a personal, close relationship with us. He will even go to great lengths to introduce Himself to us. When we draw close to Him, He Himself will give us a name by which to call Him. It is so amazing that the God who created the universe wants us to be on a first name basis with Him!

The word “name” appears in the NCV Bible over 400 times. My favorite of these verses is: “I am the Lord your God, who stirs the sea and makes the waves roar. My name is the Lord All-Powerful”  (Isa. 51:15).

When we have a very personal relationship with God, and come to know Him by name, then we can worship Him with much more intensity. When we praise God, it allows our hearts and our minds to become focused on who He is and not on ourselves and who we are.

I love Nehemiah 9:5-25  as this one passage shows us many characteristics of God and His nature. It gives us names by which to begin our relationship with God. Throughout the Bible God reveals Himself to us in many different ways and by many different names. Whereas I might use the name and say, “God is my Strength,” you might use the name and say, “God is my Power.” Two different names, both equally strong; still one God. We just have different languages.

When God first began to speak to Moses, He started out simply saying; “I am who I am!” He went on to say “I am the Lord, that is my name.” In a since He was saying, “I am the Lord, your provider. I am the Lord, your healer. I am the Lord, your protector. What ever you need Me to be I AM. Know that I am mighty and I will be all that you need.”

Often times in the Bible we will read a long list of names, showing who the father was (or mother), what family tribe they came from… the list can go on and on. It is easy to get lost in these passages. BUT, just think for a moment that God inspired the writer to write down that list-- showing that each person was of significance. Each person, no matter what they did, had a place in the family history. NO ONE was forgotten or overlooked-- God knew each one of them by name! My friend, He knows mine and YOURS as well! We have not been forgotten or overlooked, He knows everything there is to know about us. He knows us personally, and He desires for us to know Him as well.

Today I would like to share with you a list of names to hold to. Listen in your heart as the Lord whispers to you, "All that you need... I AM."

God is: All Knowing (Matt 10:29)
Two sparrows cost only a penny, but not even one of them can die without your Father’s knowing it.

God is: Faithful (Deut. 7:9)
So know that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God. He will keep his agreement of love for a thousand lifetimes for people who love him and obey his commands.

God is: my Liberator (Luke 1:68)
Let us praise the LORD, the God of Israel,
because he has come to help his people and has given them freedom.

God is: my Guardian (Ps. 121:3-4)
He will not let you be defeated. He who guards you never sleeps.
He who guards Israel never rests or sleeps.

God is: my Guide (Isa. 42:16)
Then I will lead the blind along a way they never knew: I will guide them along paths they have not known.  I will make darkness become light for them,  and the rough grounds smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not leave my people.

God is: my Counselor (1 Sam. 30:8-9)
Then David asked the LORD,  “Should I chase the people who took our families?
Will I catch them?” The LORD answered, “Chase them. You will catch them,
and you will succeed in saving your families.”

God is: my Provider (Gen. 22:14)
So Abraham named that place The LORD Provides.
Even today people say “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

God is: Loyal (Zech. 8:8)
I will bring them back, and they will live in Jerusalem.
They will be my people, and I will be their good and loyal God.

God is: my Teacher (Hosea 12:10)
I spoke to the prophets and gave them many visions,
Through them, I taught my lessons to you.

Father God, we praise You as our God. Thank You for all that You are to us. Thank You for everything You do for us. Lord, thank You that as we walk today, we can be confident in knowing You are with us.
Father God, I lift up this reader to you and pray that You will make Yourself known to them in a mighty way. Lord, I pray that in each of these ways they will see You say, "I AM." Lord I pray You will be with them and guide their steps. Lord, I ask You to help keep them focused on You, and that You will turn their eyes from anything that is not honoring of You. Lord, I pray will guard their hearts and mind in Christ.
In Christ Jesus Name,

~ My friend, know that you are special, know that you are mighty in Christ, know that the Lion of Judah roars in favor for you today.
