Today's Devotional is From Our Book:
Growing in God's Word
Devotional: Teach Me O'Lord
May 22nd

TODAY IN HIS WORD COMES FROM
(Ps 119:33-40 NASB)

Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes,
And I shall observe it to the end.
Give me understanding, that I may observe Your law
And keep it with all my heart.
Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,
For I delight in it.

THOUGHT TO PONDER:
If I were to ask my sons to go in the kitchen, and say, bake a cake, if I have never taught them how, then all I would end up with is a huge mess. God longs to teach us about Himself so that we will know Him. And He shows us His will so we will know which way to go. God doesn't expect us to stumble around in the darkness-- He shines His light so we can see the way.

TODAY’S INSIGHT INTO HIS WORD:
In His  Word, the Psalmist asked the Lord to, "Teach me." He had a hunger for God's Word and His command. The Psalmist wanted to know God's way so that he could live the way God wanted him to. The Psalmist basically made a promise to God saying, "If you would just teach me, I will follow you the rest of my days, with all of my heart."

My friend, are you hungry for God? When was the last time you asked God to teach you? My youngest son will sometimes get frustrated with his older brothers because they know how to do something, but he doesn't. My older sons forget there was a time that they didn't know either. So in a hurried way, they will just tell my youngest son “oh just do this...” but there is a difference between just telling someone something and teaching them something.

For instance, the other night the boys were playing some game on their Xbox, and my youngest son asked, "Well, how do I..." Without even taking his eyes off the screen, my middle son verbally told my youngest son what he should do. Let me tell you, that didn't go very far (or very well), and they ended up in an argument. I went out to the living room and took the controller out of my middle son's hand (which got his attention), and very firmly told him to "SHOW" his brother HOW. In the end, they played for hours and had a great time but only after my middle son had taken the time to teach my youngest child.

My friend, when we ask God to teach us, He isn't going to just ramble off something real quick and leave us to figure things out. If we have a sincere heart, and truly want to know God's ways and His plan for us,  or if we are truly seeking His direction, He will teach us. BUT not until He has our undivided attention. From experience, I can tell you He takes His time to really show us.

There have been times that my oldest son has come in and asked me how to do something, then runs off to do it before I can finish explaining to him how. Do you know what happens? He has to come back. My friend, I wish this is where I could tell you I've never done that-- but I can't. What's more is, I have made this mistake with God. There have been times I will ask for His direction, and He gives it, and I will take the ball and run with it. But often times, I have to go back and get better directions. What I have learned is that by allowing me to make some mistakes, God is teaching me. I've learned to slow down. I listen for His instructions, and I pay attention to the peace He leads me with. In allowing God to have His time to teach me HIS WAY, I learn in a way that  helps me to grow, and I can retain what He has taught.

When the Israelites were getting ready to cross over the Jordan River, Joshua told them to keep the Ark in front of them, to keep a distance between them and the ark. "When you see the  ark of the covenant of the Lord your God with the Levitical priests carrying it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. However, there shall be between you and it a distance of about 2,000  cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you shall go, for you have not passed this way before” (Josh 3:3-4 NASB).

Do you know why Joshua gave this command? So that the people couldn't get ahead of God. My friend, when we don't take the time to truly listen to Him and give Him time to teach us His ways, we will get ahead of Him every single time. It doesn't matter how long you have been a Christian, God still has new things to show you about Himself. If you are still breathing, then God isn't through with you yet. He still has things to show you. It doesn't matter how old we are or what we have done before. Each stage of our walk with God is meant to grow us closer to Him, and with each step-- in each season-- He will teach us something new.

>> So, my friend, let me ask you again, are YOU hungry for God? Are you ready to hold your hand up and just say, "Lord, here I am, teach me so I will know YOU, and I will keep YOUR ways in my heart."

PRAYING IN FAITH:
Father God, we come before You with praise. Lord, thank You for Your promise that if we call to You, You will answer us. Lord, thank You that You teach us so that we may know You. Thank You that You lead us and guide us and that we are not alone.  Lord, thank You for Your Word that we can stand on. Lord, may our feet be anointed to walk only in the steps that You lead.
Father, I lift this reader up to You. Lord, I pray that You will give this reader understanding and that they will delight themselves in Your way. Lord, may they keep Your teaching in their hearts, and may Your Word grow and enrich them in knowledge of You. Lord, I pray that You will strengthen them and keep them focused on You.
In Christ Jesus Name,
Amen.

~ My friend, have a blessed day.
