The Attributes of God
Drawing closer as we learn the Ways of God

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
and marked off the heavens by the span, and calculated the dust of the earth by
the measure, and weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills in a pair of scales?
Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as His counselor has informed Him?
With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding?
And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge
and informed Him of the way of understanding?
(Isaiah 40:12-14 NASB)

God is eternal and completely sovereign. He was the first, and He will be the last, there is no other God, and for all His vastness-- He simply IS GOD. He has divine foreknowledge and sees the future because He has already been there: our tomorrows are His yesterdays, and He knows how to lead us through this thing we call “life.”

I have a friend with whom I have spent countless hours on the phone (since she is many hours away from me) praying. Even though there are miles between us, I can feel God’s Holy Spirit with us as we pray. One of the things I love about her is her sheer joy in the Lord. Many times I have heard her just get so excited and exclaim “Lord, You're just SO GOD!” And that is just so fitting and true-- He is so good and just SO GOD! There is no containing Him. There is no way to put Him into a box, and don’t think for a moment that you know all there is to know about Him because if you do, He will blow the lid off the box!

My friend, God does not need our advice! God doesn’t need to sit down with us to “figure things out” because His wisdom is so much deeper than ours.  There are so many different ways to know God as we go through life. Every season of our life is going to be different, and in each season we will come to know Him differently. Each of us is on a personal walk with God, so when one of us needs Him to be MIGHTY-- someone else may need Him to be the God of comfort, and He can be experienced in these ways to different people at the same time!

The following are just a few different attributes of God. Listed are key verses for you to look up  to write down (in the Bible version of your choice), so that you can build a more personal concordance of God's Word-- there by helping you to grow with God while you journey through His Word.

God is Eternal: God is “age long” and has simply always been and is never ending. God will always be; He is timeless and without measure.

God is Sovereign: His ways are so  much  higher  than  our  ways. He in in our midst of all things. Nothing comes to us that hasn’t been sifted through His hands first. He knows how to work things out in our lives (often times without us even knowing) so that we-- in our generation-- will be in line with what is needed in (and through) the next generation. Some things will not make sense to us, and we may be left with a lot of “but why…” in our lives that will not be understood until we get to heaven, because He can see so much MORE than us. He sees the BIGGER picture from before us and much later AFTER us, and because of this; His way will be established even if we are unaware of how significant each little "dust of sand " is in our lives and in our steps.

God is Immutable: God is unchanging and He is the same God as before. He is dependable because He doesn’t change His mind. When He says “YES” He means yes; and  when He says “NO” He means no. He is not swayed by different moods.  He is rock solid, and He is stable.

God is Omnipresent: God is always present, and He is always with us. Just as God is not restrained to time--- He is not confined to one space. God can be with all of us personally at the same time. It doesn’t matter if we feel like we can feel His presence or not-- He is there. There is no place we can hide from God, and no pit (or cavern) so deep that He cannot reach us.

God is Omnipotent: there is nothing too difficult for God, He is all-powerful. No matter what the situation looks like, God can do a mighty work when He is ready to. There is no river too wide or too deep that He cannot get us across. There is no obstacle that He cannot overcome and NO BARRIER that He cannot get through. Whatever it is we are going through, God is more powerful than anything we may be facing.
