Devotional: A Worshiper's Heart

Taken from " The Very Heart of Worship"

Lord, I will thank you with all my heart;
I will sing to you before the gods.
I will bow down facing your holy Temple,
and I will thank you for your love and loyalty.
You have made your name and your word greater than anything.
On the day I called to you, you answered me.
You made me strong and brave.
Lord, let all the kings of the earth praise you
when they hear the words you speak.
They will sing about what the LORD has done,
because the LORD’s glory is great.
~Ps. 138:1-5~

So what is a heart of worship? It is a heart lifted up to God in total adoration of who He is and what He has done for us. It’s where our hearts belong -- in God. When Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came to see Moses in Exodus 18, the first thing Moses did was to tell Jethro all God had done for them and what Moses had witnessed. And, the very first thing Jethro did was to praise God, and then the two men worshiped in thanksgiving. That’s what we should do, that’s what we are called to do: to worship God.

When we do this, it takes our eyes off of ourselves and keeps our focus on God, which is where it needs to be. When we worship God, it helps us to see that maybe the whole reason we were able is because God was able. Maybe the whole reason something worked out in our favor is because we are in God’s favor. When we are strengthened and have victory, we need to remember where that truly comes from. When we start taking credit, or patting ourselves on the back, we gradually begin to believe in “coincidences” and our eyes begin to close as we completely miss seeing the glory of God.

A heart of worship is a heart that looks toward God no matter what the situation is. The very first thing our hearts do is worship the Lord.  A heart of worship is a heart that turns to God daily in thanksgiving and spends time in His presence to bask in and to share His love for us.  A heart of worship sees past ourselves to the traces of God’s movement in our lives, where He has walked with us, worked in us, and gone before us to lead us into all He has for us. A heart of worship seeks God first in all things: in triumph, in victory, in sorrow, in need, in comfort, in friendship, and in complete appreciation and admiration because He is God.

When we walk outside and see a breathtaking view and immediately thank God for His majesty, our heart is in worship. When we watch a loved one do something they could not have done on their own so we know God had to have helped, and quietly thank Him, our heart is in worship. When we are driving and just miss having an accident and, with a sigh of relief, we express thanks to God, our heart is in worship.

When hardship comes and we immediately seek God’s counsel, again our heart is in worship. When life falls apart and the first thing we do is ask God, “Where do we go from here?” our heart is in worship. And when things just don’t make sense, but we can close our eyes and give it to God by saying, “Your will, not mine,” our heart is in worship. When God is all things, when God is our rock, our fortress, our everything, then our heart expresses worship.

Jesus said in John 6:29, “The only work God wants you to do is believe the one He sent.” If we will just do our part, then God will do the rest. If we will take that one step, God is able to take the rest. If we will do our job, and just trust in Him, obey Him, and worship Him, we will see that LORD God is GOD.

Listen to the words of Moses as he sings: “The LORD gives me strength and makes me sing; he has saved me. He is my God, and I will praise him. He is the God of my ancestors, and I will honor him.  The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name” (Exod. 15:2-3).

Join with the Psalmist in Psalms 100:3 and rejoice: “Know that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him; we are his people, the sheep he tends.”

Let the words in Deut. 4:35-39 go deep into the recesses of your heart: “You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other. From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today. Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.”

And then listen to the mightiness of the Voice of God saying:

“I am the Lord. That is my name.
I will not give my glory to another;
I will not let idols take the praise that should be mine”
(Isa. 42:8)

Take heart today, simply KNOW and BELIEVE that
the LORD Is God- He is YOUR GOD!

Know that the LORD is His name,
and He waits for you to call upon Him,
and He waits for you to personally
“come and see” and get to know Him.
